Sunderland manager Jack Ross has been mooted by a BBC Sport Scotland journalist as a contender to be the Celtic boss this summer.

Correspondent Stefan Bienkowski suggested on his personal Twitter account that the Hoops could be “tempted” to swoop for the former St Mirren manager as he’s “one of the most exciting, young Scottish coaches right now”.

Celtic appointed Neil Lennon as the successor to Brendan Rodgers earlier this week as he returned for a second Parkhead spell but he has initially got the job only for the rest of the season.

OPINION

Like Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United, Lennon is well placed to make a convincing case to be the next permanent Celtic manager. Some have claimed he should get the job given his association with the club and his track record, but much will surely depend on the events of the next three months. Ross is currently on his third managerial post after cutting his teeth at Alloa Athletic and St Mirren, who he steered to promotion to the SPL last season. He has made a big impact at Sunderland, who are third in League One and just two points adrift of the second automatic promotion place. Ross’ star is on the rise, and managing the north-east giants has given him perfect exposure to a club with a massive fan base where expectations are high. His knowledge of the Scottish league is extensive, and he is certainly an intriguing suggestion by the BBC journalist. It’s Lennon’s job to lose, but Ross should be a strong rival contender.
