Adrian Durham fumed after a fan texted talkSPORT to suggest that Conor Coady didn’t receive an England call-up because Wolves are unfashionable.

The broadcaster highlighted that players from Stoke City, Burnley and Bournemouth had all made Gareth Southgate’s latest squad so that couldn’t be the reason why the Wolves defender wasn’t selected.

Durham added that Southgate wouldn’t be the sort of manager to disregard players due to the team they play for and described it as an insane suggestion.

“We’ve got a Stoke keeper for heavens sake, look at the squad, a keeper from Stoke and you’re saying Wolves are unfashionable?” said Durham on talkSPORT (Wednesday March 13th, 17:25).

“There’s two Burnley players, a Bournemouth player, Ruben Loftus-Cheek got in the World Cup squad playing for Crystal Palace.

“That’s utter nonsense…that’s not the reason why he hasn’t been picked, seriously Gareth Southgate was in here on drive for an hour last week and the way he talks, do you honestly think those are the words of a man who would be like Wolves aren’t very fashionable I won’t pick from their team.

“It’s insane to think that, Simon get a grip.”

OPINION

Durham is right to fume as surely Wolves shouldn’t be considered unfashionable at this point. The Premier League team are flying high in the division and play football that supporters can get behind. While that definitely isn’t the reason, it is a bit of mystery why Coady was snubbed by Southgate when it came to his latest England squad. The 26-year-old centre-back has been superb all season and has arguably been one of the most impressive English defenders in the division. Coady has been consistent in his 36 outings and his form does warrant a call-up. The only issue is, who would Southgate not have called up instead? Everton enforcer Michael Keane seems like the obvious player to highlight but the Toffees’ centre-back has done well to impress with his defensive teammates struggling around him. While it’s unclear why Coady didn’t make the cut, if he keeps doing what he is doing, he’ll be playing for England in no time.
