OPINION

There’s a curious Tottenham transfer story currently doing the rounds on social media. Bolivian news outlet El Dia has claimed that Julio Cesar Torres has agreed a pre-contract deal with Tottenham ahead of a trial in April. The 21-year-old was even pictured signing an admittedly dodgy looking contract with the Tottenham logo on it.

His agent claimed that Torres had picked Spurs over Spanish side Vallodolid.

It’s left Tottenham fans confused – and split. Some Spurs fans are so desperate for news of a signing that that they’re getting excited by the news, with one saying he was “buzzing” and another saying it was either “genius” or “odd”.

However, other Tottenham fans are far from convinced by the story, especially after doing a ‘Danny Rose’ and googling the player. Their searches haven’t thrown up any information on the player, which throws shade on the veracity of the report and the image. Even if he was a real player, many Tottenham fans point out that there’s no way he’d get a work permit with his lack of experience.

Which just leaves the mystery of where the story has come from and why it’s got so much traction. Social media can make a story fly if it ends up being retweeted by the right accounts, and that seems to be the case here. But the story has been picked up by many media outlets, although none have been able to rake up any more solid information.

We’re going to put this one down to fake news – sorry Spurs fans, you’re going to have to wait a bit longer for a new player to arrive in north London.
