There were many Tottenham Hotspur players who fell short in the second half of their shock 2-1 defeat at Southampton on Saturday, but Danny Rose was perhaps chief amongst them.

The left back had a pretty decent game all things considered, but there will undoubtedly be one moment that will stick in the minds of Spurs fans – and not in a good way.

The England international inexplicably let the ball run past him and through to Yan Valery to convert the equaliser for the hosts. It was completely bizarre, it wasn’t a difficult ball to clear but somehow Rose allowed it to slip past him.

That’s simply not good enough for a player of his experience and quality and it proved to be the turning point in the game. Saints midfielder James Ward-Prowse went on to curl a beautiful free kick home to give Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side a shock victory at St Mary’s Stadium.

The 28-year-old is one of Mauricio Pochettino’s most trusted players and he has been fairly impressive in recent months. However, he let his team down badly here.

How could he have let that cross get past him? He wasn’t the only Tottenham player to commit that mistake but he was the one in the best position to clear the ball.

It wasn’t a fierce cross along the face of goal, rather it trickled past a coterie of Spurs defender. However, it appeared a very simple task for Rose to smash the ball away, but he didn’t.

There’s no doubt that the Tottenham supporters will be fuming with him after his moment of madness cost Pochettino’s team badly on Saturday.
