Tottenham may go for an experienced head in goal to replace Michel Vorm when he leaves the club this summer, according to a reliable journalist.

Football London’s Alasdair Gold reveals in a Q&A for the site (Monday, 5.09pm) that the Dutch keeper Vorm is “expected” to sever his ties with the club after five years.

He saidĀ goalkeeping coach Toni Jimenez will make the call over whether home-grown Alfie Whiteman, who is currently fourth in the pecking order, can step up as the third choice keeper.

OPINION

It would rank as a major snub for Whiteman if he is overlooked for the number three role when Vorm departs. The 20-year-old trains with the senior squad and has barely been involved this season with the Under-23s, making four Premier League 2 appearances. With Paulo Gazzaniga proving this season that not only is he a capable back-up to established number one Hugo Lloris, but possibly also capable of competing with the France World Cup winner for a starting place, Mauricio Pochettino has no need to sign an expensive keeper. Is Whiteman ready to step up? Only Jimenez and the coaching staff can judge for certain. It would be a major blow to the home-grown youngster’s hopes of making it at Spurs if he doesn’t get the nod from Jimenez. An experienced head willing to settle for a fringe role would also make sense, but it would be far better for he academy set-up if Whiteman gets the green light.
