Tottenham have been issued with an ultimatum by the Premier League, who have said they must either play their next home game at the new stadium or stay at Wembley until the end of the season.

The Times exclusive claims this would mean that either one of the games against Brighton & Hove Albion or Huddersfield Town next month (FA Cup depending) would be the first game in the new stadium, or that it wouldn’t see any PL action until next season.

The Premier League hasn’t set a deadline yet for the announcement but it is believed this will have to be at the middle of this month.

The Times claims it is “likely to come after the FA Cup quarter-finals on the weekend of March 16/17.”

OPINION

One way or another it looks like Tottenham will have to make a decision on their new stadium by the middle of March. That’s got to be a relief for fans and getting a definitive yes or no is much needed. It looks like Tottenham are almost there and just have to stage two test events. If these are successful then the stadium can open, but they haven’t got much time to get these done and make their intentions clear to the Premier League. If it’s ruled that they have to stay at Wembley until the end of the season, questions will be asked as to why this decision wasn’t taken by Tottenham earlier. There were financial implications but the uncertainty can’t have helped Mauricio Pochettino’s men. On the flip side, the stadium looks incredible and having a few games to play there this season could really set them up for a tilt at the title in their new home next campaign.
