Former Premier League winner Alan Shearer has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur were lucky to get a point against Arsenal on Saturday.

Harry Kane’s second half penalty cancelled out Aaron Ramsey’s opener, but Shearer believes that Mauricio Pochettino’s side were fortunate to get something from the game.

Replying to a tweet that showed Kane stating the draw was well deserved, Shearer quickly rubbished the England captain’s claim: “They were lucky to get a point!,” he wrote on his personal Twitter account.

OPINION

It’s hard to disagree with Shearer, here. For much of Saturday’s game Tottenham were indeed the poorer side. Unai Emery set his team up very well and Arsenal bossed large portions of proceedings at Wembley. However, to Spurs’ credit they stuck at it and they were able to grind out a positive result. Obviously they would have liked to win the game but at least they got something from the contest. You have to side with Shearer’s interpretation of the game ahead of Kane’s, though. The Tottenham goalscorer was likely demonstrating some bias with his comments here, whereas Shearer was watching the game as a neutral. He was able to see that Tottenham were not the better team on Saturday and that they were slightly lucky to come away with a point. Spurs fans likely won’t see it that way but from a neutral perspective it was clear who the superior team was on the day.
