Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino looks likely to stay at the club for another season but could look to leave in the summer of 2020 with “serious talks” over his contract on the cards, according to the Daily Express.

The newspaper claim on their website that with Manchester United and Real Madrid both having managers who look to remain past the summer, there will not be any top jobs where the Argentine would want to move, with Barcelona and Chelsea both ruled out through his loyalty to Espanyol and Spurs.

However it is stated that next season will be crucial for the future of the former Southampton man, with contract negotiations likely to be opened after seeing Pochettino pen a new deal every two years – his last one signed in 2018.

The report claims that success could see him demand whatever he wants, while failure could see both Pochettino looking for pastures new and Daniel Levy willing to cash in for compensation.

Opinion

Pochettino is perhaps the most important cog in the Tottenham machine and keeping him on board will be the priority for Levy and the rest of the board in north London. His success can be measured both on the pitch, with the Lilywhites now firmly established among the elite of English football, and off it, with a hugely impressive amount of youngsters coming through the ranks and into the first team – testament to the coaching abilities of Pochettino and his team. Losing him would be a bitter blow but as the report says, there are not likely to be many, if any, offers coming his way which will tempt him to leave his project at Spurs earlier than expected. Next summer is a different matter entirely and so the 2019/20 campaign will be a huge determining factor as to whether he stays or goes. There will likely be plenty of suitors every summer, but only the right one will do for the Argentine.
