Real Madrid are willing to pay a whopping £40million in compensation to make Mauricio Pochettino their next manager, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claim the Spanish giants are readying an approach for the Argentine following a wretched campaign and Spurs fear he could quit after falling out of the title race.

The Sun report Pochettino has told chairman Daniel Levy of his “burning ambition” to win titles and is “fed-up” with the criticism of his failure to win a trophy in five years in north London.

OPINION

Who can blame Pochettino for being agitated and frustrated by the criticism of the trophy blank he has drawn during his half-decade in north London? No one can question the consistency of the team, or how they have managed to out-smart wealthier and overwhelm better resourced rivals – notably Arsenal and Manchester United – throughout the Argentine’s reign. But even Lilywhites will point out that Pochettino has not helped himself by selecting weakened teams in the FA Cup and League Cup when easier routes to trophies were on offer. His claim that winning trophies merely stokes egos was also ridiculous and counter-productive. That said, there isn’t a Tottenham fan out there who wouldn’t want Pochettino in charge for the start of next season. Hanging on to him is an absolute must, whatever mammoth compensation fee moneybags Real are willing to offer to take him back to Spain.
