Sky Sports pundit Neil McCann has blasted Celtic fans for the “astonishing” abuse they have aimed at Brendan Rodgers since the Northern Irishman quit Parkhead to take charge of Leicester.

Rodgers left a sour taste in the mouths of Hoops supporters on Tuesday when he decided to quit the Glasgow giants and replace Claude Puel at the King Power.

Some fans decided to unfurl a banner about Rodgers during the 2-1 win against Hearts at Tynecastle on Wednesday night.

And ex-Rangers player McCann, who was in the Sky Sports studio on Wednesday, has suggested that it wasn’t an appropriate thing for the Celtic supporters to do.

“Maybe he thought this was the best thing for the club. I still find the banner and some of the abuse he’s taken astonishing,” McCann said, as quoted by the Glasgow Evening Times.

“I felt the banner was a bit over-the-top. Seven out of seven is a pretty good return.”

OPINION

Rodgers has already achieved immortality at Celtic Park – he is in no way a “fraud”. The former Liverpool boss arrived in Glasgow in 2016, led the Hoops to an unbeaten season in domestic football, led them on a British record 69-game unbeaten run and seal two trebles in a row. He left Parkhead with seven winners’ medals and a place in the club’s history. Rodgers’ exit from Celtic was inevitable. Yes, he probably could have waited until the summer but Leicester are a decent opportunity for Rodgers, who may be looking to prove himself in England once again so that he can get his foot in the door at one of the top-six clubs. It’s expected that Celtic fans will be disappointed by Rodgers’ decision to walk out on them, but like McCann says, some of the response has been way over the top. That’s what happens in Scottish football unfortunately, the fans of the Old Firm are always finding a way to get themselves at the centre of attention.
