Ray Parlour believes that Tottenham need “more investment” when they eventually move into their new stadium this year.

He says that this type of investment could prove to be the difference between them winning the Premier League next season or not, and remarked how important it is that Spurs hang onto the talent that they already have in their squad.

Parlour added that there is no point in moving somewhere new then not signing the right players, comparing the situation to when Arsenal moved to the Emirates.

“It’s so important they keep the players they have got. They have an excellent team, but they need that bit more investment to get the right players in. It’s no good having a new stadium but not having a brilliant team,” he said on Sky Sports’ ‘The Debate’ [08/03, 22:00].

“They have got a brilliant team but they can get better with a bit of investment. That could be the difference between them winning the league or not.

“This happened with Arsenal. Moving stadium was the right thing to do revenue wise and to get the brand up to another level but they really suffered on the pitch because there wasn’t investment, which is why Arsene Wenger did such a great job getting into the Champions League every season.”

OPINION

The debate surrounding the date when Tottenham would move into their new stadium rolled on for a while, but it now looks like they could be moving into their new home before the end of the season. Parlour is right though, there is no point having an impressive ground if you do not have the impressive players to match. This is what needed to be done, no matter if Spurs were moving stadiums or not. They have not spent money on players for quite a while now, and this will need to change if they are to challenge for the Premier League title next season. They have proved this term that they are able to get close to it with the crop of players that they already have but signing some top-class talent will surely propel them up a level and get them competing at the same standard as Manchester City and Liverpool.
