OPINION

The chances of Christian Eriksen still being at Tottenham next season are ebbing away.

Widespread reports claim the great Dane has rejected a number of lucrative contract offers from Spurs and is braced to assess his options in the summer over a big-money move.

Supporters have questioned Eriksen’s performances of late, noting that he has been far more effective in the Champions League than in domestic competition.

Could this mean he is especially eager to convince potential elite-club suitors of his calibre as they eye a swoop on north London for one of the star men of the Mauricio Pochettino era?

The Daily Telegraph claim in an update on Eriksen’s future that he “appears to have had his head turned”by interest from Real Madrid ahead of the summer transfer window.

The newspaper claim in an email to their readers that the Denmark international, 27, is one of five senior players whose lengthy spell at Spurs could come to an end when the season finishes.

Eriksen is irreplaceable as far as the Londoners and their fans are concerned.

His inventiveness and technical excellence is unmatched by any other Spurs player, and indeed many footballers anywhere in Europe.

What makes the Dane stand out is his work ethic and willingness to fit into the needs of the team. He never shirks, or refuses to do the hard yards.

News that Eriksen has had his head turned is alarming for Lilywhites amid his contract stalemate, and the realisation of their worst fears.
