OPINION
Newcastle United defender Javier Manquillo is usually on the receiving end of hate after matches, and that has been no different following the 2-0 loss to West Ham on Saturday. His last performance against Burnley made him look transformed, but that could not be more inaccurate looking back at this performance. He really struggled to go forward effectively and he looked “pedestrian” at times, so it will no doubt start to make some supporters wonder why he is starting ahead of DeAndre Yedlin. Yedlin has the pace to scare defences and this would no doubt have been the case on Saturday, but Rafa Benitez has clearly adopted a more defensive approach recently. While this has proved dividends in some cases, that was certainly not the case here. Sometimes, those tactics are going to backfire on him, so hopefully he has learnt his lesson on this occasion. Either way, the fans are not massive admirers of Manquillo, and that is never going to really change much.

Need Yedlin’s pace. Manquillo is your pedestrian.

Spot on this! Ritchie off the pace, poor deliveries all game, manquillo hopeless, Hayden limited, Almiron couldn’t get in the game.

Manquillo is as creative as a dracula costume on Halloween. Lejuene has had a stinker. Rondon has been poor. We’ve never looked confident at all #nufc

Very poor performance! Very un-nufc of late! Rondon snatching at chances a bit! Perez is aparantly made out of paper and could be carried away by the wind… Manquillo clearly won a competition to be a footballer #nufc

Javier Manquillo. Provided hope for all us non-footballers that there’s still a chance of making it #nufc
