OPINION
There were more than a few raised eyebrows when midfielder Mo Diame was named in Rafa Benitez’s starting line up for Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon against Bournemouth. With Sean Longstaff out for the foreseeable future, the race to find a long term replacement is well and truly on at St. James’ Park. Ki Sung-yueng was given the nod last weekend, and after his impressive cameo against Everton on Sunday, you would have been forgiven for thinking that it might be Jonjo Shelvey who was given the spot next to Isaac Hayden in the centre of the park, but against most expectations, and perhaps better judgement, it was Diame who lined up in the engine room. You can never fault Diame’s effort, and to be fair to him he provides a different dimension in midfield that Benitez might have fancied in a game that proved to be a very tight affair. Fundamentally, however, there was a sheer lack of quality in his play throughout, and the frequency with which he wasted possession, misplacing simple passes, was far too high. There is clearly a role for Diame at the club, but when he continues to show this level of inconsistency, it’s hard to see how a starting place can be justified.

I don’t dislike Diame, but the difference between him and Longstaff already is ridiculous. Diame so untidy
