Liverpool centre-back Dejan Lovren is wanted by three Italian clubs, Napoli, AC Milan and Roma, according to the Sun.

The 29-year-old Croatian international has had a stop-start-stop season at Anfield after playing the World Cup in the summer and then missing the first seven games of the Premier League through injury.

He started nine games after this but has been missing again since mid-January with another injury. With Joe Gomez also out, Joel Matip has stepped up to partner Virgil van Dijk in the heart of the Liverpool defence.

The Sun report states that Lovren is rated at £25million.

OPINION

Lovren came in for a lot of criticism last season and Liverpool fans were desperate for Klopp to sign another centre-back in the summer. That didn’t happen and fans thought defence would be the weakspot for Klopp’s side. It couldn’t have turned out any more differently. Liverpool have actually got the best defensive record this season in the Premier League, with only Man City close to them. They’ve only let in 18 goals all season and that’s a big part of why they’re currently top of the league. Van Dijk and Alisson get a lot of credit for this but Lovren has played well when called upon. Liverpool only let in five goals in the nine games he played and it’s fair to say that he’s exceeded expectations. However, Klopp could well strengthen this summer and there’s a feeling that Lovren, heading towards 30, could be the player that’s considered surplus to requirements. Lovren might also prefer a move where he’ll be the number one choice. He wants to play regularly and still has a good number of years left in his career. The more sedate pace of the Italian game could suit him.
