Liverpool have no plans to spend big in the forthcoming transfer window and repeat their £170million spree of last summer, according to the Echo.

The regional newspaper claim the Merseyside giants “will be in the market to fine tune ahead of the new season, but a relatively modest outlay is anticipated”.

This Echo update comes after reports in Italy this week that Liverpool are “serious” about making a move for Juventus star Paulo Dybala in the upcoming window, while they have also been strongly linked with Ajax defender Matthijs De Ligt.

OPINION

This report should at least have the effect of pouring cold water over excitable claims about Liverpool smashing their transfer record to sign some of the world’s elite talent. Will last summer’s massive spend prove to be a one-off? Possibly. One thing’s for sure: fans shouldn’t be rushing out to get ‘Dybala’ or ‘De Ligt’ printed on the back of their replica shirt, never mind ‘Fekir’ in homage to the 2018 summer transfer that collapsed at the eleventh hour and does not look like being resurrected. Liverpool have been big spenders over the last 18 months, and the £250million outlay compares with any of the elite during that period. But, the club’s actual net spend is relatively low, not only due to the £142million Philippe Coutinho sale, but a string of other shrewd deals that have enable the club to maximise all the fees for players sold, including the likes of Dominic Solanke, Danny Ward, Mamadou Sakho, Kevin Stewart, Lucas Leiva, Christian Benteke, Joe Allen, Jordon Ibe and Jerome Sinclair.
