Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker has praised Chelsea striker Gonzalo Higuain after he scored in his team’s 2-1 win over Fulham on Sunday.

The Argentine missed a few decent chances early on in the game at Craven Cottage but was able to fire his team in front with a tremendous finish.

Lineker was clearly impressed with the veteran frontman: “Great finish from Higuain, a superb old fashioned fox in the box,” he wrote on his personal Twitter account.

OPINION

It’s no surprise to see one striker praise another and Lineker clearly appreciated Higuain’s fine finish for Chelsea’s opening goal on Sunday. The Englishman will likely have been impressed by the Chelsea man’s perseverance, too, after he had missed a couple of terrific opportunities early on in the game. It would have been easy for Higuain to become discouraged after spurning those chances, particularly after the slightly lacklustre start to his Chelsea career. Lineker is right, though, Higuain’s finish was excellent. It was a first time conversion from a wonderful ball into the box – certainly not an easy opportunity. The former England international is also spot on in his assessment of Higuain. He is a natural fox in the box, a throwback striker more reminiscent of Lineker’s era than the footballing age we are currently experiencing. It was good to see him get another goal after a barren run of games and Lineker was obviously pleased too.
