Arsenal are interested in signing Man United midfielder Ander Herrera on a free transfer this summer, according to the Daily Mail.

The report claims that with Herrera’s contract set to expire in the summer, he has been free to talk to foreign clubs since January 1.

That’s opened the door for PSG, who have already spoken to Herrera’s representatives over a possible move to France at the end of the season.

Arsenal are said to have “registered an interest” too but the report claims the player would prefer to stay at Man United. However, talks have reached an impasse with Herrera reportedly wanting wages of £150,000-a-week from his current £80,000-a-week.

A good move for Arsenal?

Herrera has started playing more since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over from Jose Mourinho but the former Spanish international has never really reached the heights he would have hoped for at Old Trafford. He joined for £32million from Athletic Bilbao in 2014 and while it seems United would like him to stay, they might not be willing to pay him enough to keep hold of him. On a free transfer Arsenal would be getting a great deal and could afford his wages in the absence of a fee. They need strengthening in midfield and Herrera would offer something different to Lucas Torreira.

Likely to happen?

It seems like the ball is in United’s court. Are they willing to bump Herrera up past some of the more junior members of the squad? Just how highly does Solskjaer rate him in the light of rebuilding a squad ready to win the Premier League? There’s not a lot of time left to get a contract sorted and the fact it’s dragged on so long means a move is definitely more than just a possibility. PSG have the upper hand and are already talking to his agent, though, and Herrera might well prefer a move overseas than trying his hand at another Premier League club. Especially one that’s still struggling like Arsenal. PSG can offer Champions League, something that Arsenal are still battling to secure.
