Manchester United are set to trigger a 12-month extension in Marcus Rashford’s contract, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claims that United have grown frustrated in talks over a new deal for the 21-year-old star, who has been in superb form since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took the reins at Old Trafford.

It is understood that the Red Devils were confident that a new deal would have been agreed by now, but with Rashford’s current contract set to expire at the end of next season, the club has taken the step to trigger a one-year extension clause.

OPINION

It is a very good job that Man United included that clause in Rashford’s current deal, otherwise there would be a lot of interest in his signature in the next transfer window. Real Madrid are said to be interested in signing the forward, who has scored 12 goals and supplied nine assists in 38 appearances across all competitions. Man United cannot afford to lose a player as key as the England international for next to nothing, so protecting their asset by extending his deal is a smart move. Hopefully it buys them plenty of time to reach an agreement over a new lucrative deal, while it would also give them the chance to sell him for a much higher fee if new terms cannot be agreed. It is unlikely to get to that point as no one can see Rashford playing for anyone but United right now, but in the world of football, nothing is guaranteed, especially loyalty.
