Bolton are in an absolute financial mess at the moment, something which every football fan in English football can sympathise with, but the knock-on effect of their issues could cause a major issue for Leeds United in their bid for automatic promotion.

According to the Sun, Bolton could be forced into liquidation, and that would mean their results for this season would be “wiped out”, causing complete anarchy at both the bottom and the top of the Championship table.

Leeds have beaten Bolton twice this season, which means that they could lose six points if the cash-strapped club is liquidated.

It is understood that would be the “nightmare scenario” for the Trotters, but it is still something that could very much happen before the end of the season if they are unable to fulfill their fixtures.

League leaders Norwich has also picked up six points against Bolton this season, as have Sheffield United, so Leeds would not lose or gain any ground on the top-two.

However fourth-placed West Brom were beaten by the North-West club on the opening day of the campaign, and would only lose three points if their results were to be wiped from the records.

That means that the Baggies would move within three points of Leeds and revive their bid for promotion in the most bizarre – and unfair – circumstances, as they would effectively be rewarded for losing to someone.

As the Sun says though, this is the very worst scenario for Bolton as HMRC tries to pocket at least £1.2 million in unpaid tax from the relegation-threatened side.

Their owner Ken Anderson is said to be in desperate talks to sell up and hopefully he is able to do to stop this absolute farce from happening.
