They might have launched themselves to the top of the Championship table against West Brom but Leeds United’s brilliant performance just highlighted how inconsistent they have been at times.

There is one Elland Road star who typifies their roller-coaster of a season more than anyone though; Ezgjan Alioski.

The Macedonian blows hot and cold like the British weather and has had as many top drawer displays as he has ones where the fans have been tearing their hair out.

His performance against Queens Park Rangers in midweek certainly fell into the latter category, putting in a display lacking in quality at both ends of the pitch.

It was an outing which was a long way off what the Leeds faithful have come to expect of the versatile flyer, who has been moved from a left wing role to a left wing back position, and quite frankly had he been axed against the Baggies on Friday night he could have had no complaints.

Manager Marcelo Bielsa kept faith with the same side – likely to the frustrations of Barry Douglas on the sidelines – and Alioski repaid his boss’ faith with a blistering display which showed the best of his qualities.

Nullifying one of the most dangerous attacks in the Championship, he caused havoc in the attacking third with his pace, desire and quality out wide and there could well be an argument to say it was his best ever performance for the club.

He has not been on top of his game every match but this was a display of the highest order and after flopping in midweek has surely saved himself from the threat of the axe – for at least another week or two, that is.
