Jeff Stelling apologised to Aston Villa as they didn’t win the performance of the week award despite defeating Derby County 4-0.

The presenter announced that Tranmere had won the weekly award for their display during the 1-0 win over Exeter City but noted the Villan’s demolition of Frank Lampard’s side in the process.

“On to the latest LG performance of the week award, apologies to Aston Villa for their 4-0 demolition of Derby County erm as it goes to Tranmere for their 1-0 win over Exeter City,” said Stelling on Soccer Saturday (Sky Sports, March 9th, 14:09).

After defeating Derby County, Dean Smith’s team are aiming to make it two wins on the bounce when they face Birmingham City on Sunday.

OPINION

Aston Villa won’t be too disheartened over missing out on the LG performance of the week as it’s not the most prestigious honour, but they will appreciate Stelling highlighting their latest result. Ahead of the clash with Derby there would have few confidently backing the Villans to beat Lampard’s side let alone confidently sweep them aside. Yet that’s exactly what happen as the Villans were in cruise control against derby. In recent weeks the Villans’ form has been disappointing but perhaps the emphatic win against Derby can kick start their season in the nick of time. Aston Villa should be at least targeting getting in the play-offs but as it stands their dark horses to make them. Smith’s side currently sit 12th in the Championship, six points off sixth-placed Bristol City. So if they are to make the play-off they really need to get maximum points from the majority of their matches that remain to have a good chance of hijacking the play-off party.
