Former Aston Villa striker Stan Collymore has claimed that ‘the city is ours’ after the Villans triumphed in the 1-0 win over Birmingham City on Sunday.

Jack Grealish scored the game’s only goal – having earlier been physically attacked by someone who encroached onto the pitch from the Birmingham stands – to secure all three points for Dean Smith’s side.

Collymore, a vocal Villa supporter, was clearly delighted with the result: “The City is OURS,” he wrote on his personal Twitter account after the game.

“UP THE VILLA,” he finished.

OPINION

This was a fantastic result for Villa and Collymore was understandably excited after the game. Smith’s team needed this result if they were to remain in play off contention, and they are now just four points away from achieving their goal. They feel closer to the play offs than they have all season and this result was a big part of that. Birmingham are not only Villa’s fiercest rivals, but they are one of their direct competitors for a play off spot. So for Villa to get the win on Sunday was a very big deal and Collymore was delighted as a result. Villa have always seemed like the big brother in their relationship with the Blues and that merely continued at St Andrew’s. It was amazing to see Grealish get the winner, as well, having earlier been the victim of one of the most heinous acts we have ever seen on a football pitch. It was a wonderful moment for him, the club and the supporters and Collymore was clearly over the moon with the result.
