Sky Sports pundit David Prutton has said he is impressed by the job Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa has done but that he actually expected much more from the Whites this season.

The Elland Road outfit currently sit third in the Championship on 73 points, behind both Norwich City and Sheffield United after losing narrowly to the Blades in the last game before the international break.

However Prutton, who does weekly predictions for the Championship, revealed he thought that Leeds would have been flying much higher, his forecast to this point putting Bielsa’s men on 95 points in first – a huge gulf compared to where they actually sit.

He wrote in his Sky Sports column: “I massively rate the jobs that Marcelo Bielsa and Chris Wilder have done and for most of the season I have felt that these are the two class sides in the division.

“They are pretty hard to ever back against and that probably shows in why I have given them so many points! I am sure that Leeds, having been beaten by Sheffield United last weekend, would take a 20-point gap to third right now!

Opinion

Prutton might have let his Leeds background get the better of him in his predictions for the Whites would be on course to break the 100 points barrier quite easily if he had been right every week. In reality the top of the table is much, much closer than anyone could have guessed and while it must be torture for the fans of the clubs involved, it makes seriously entertaining watching every week. There have been more twists and turns than an Agatha Christie novel over the course of the season and you would not dare bet against there being some more drama before the campaign comes to an end. The defeat to Sheffield United has not done Leeds any good and that was a game Bielsa and his men would have wanted at least a point from. It means that they have got some catching up to do if they want to be promoted automatically – not to mention live up to Prutton’s predictions this season.
