Leeds United sent a scout to watch Atletico Bilbao’s match with Espanyol on Friday and Alaves’ clash with Eibar on Saturday, according to Scouts in Attendance.

The reliable Twitter account claims that Marcelo Bielsa had a member of staff at both La Liga games over the weekend, both of which finished in 1-1 draws.

While no definite targets were named in Scouts in Attendance’s tweet, Ibai Gomez, who Goal reported was a target of United’s in the last transfer window, did come on for the last 15 minutes of Bilbao’s match, having signed for the Basque club from Alaves in January.

OPINION

This is a really promising report for Leeds United. Whether they are aiming to rekindle an interest in Gomez or whether they have spotted another player as a potential recruit is unclear, but either way, the signs are that they are looking to make additions to Bielsa’s squad, and that can only be a good thing. The standard of matches being watched is also a cause for positivity, with all sides in the top tier in Spain and doing relatively well. Evidently, Leeds have got one eye on next season, and they will feel that they have every chance of building a really good side for a fairly cheap amount if they look to recruit from European leagues. If there’s one thing that you can count on Bielsa and his staff for it is meticulous scouting, and Leeds fans will be licking their lips at the prospect of all the hidden gems the Argentine could unearth with the right backing and a Premier League budget.
