Adrian Durham claimed his respect for Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa was reaching all time peak levels after hearing his remarks on a fan attacking Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish.

The Leeds manager claimed that the person who entered the field to hit the Villans playmaker from behind was more than likely expressing personal frustrations not related to football as an individual who was satisfied with their life wouldn’t act like that.

“The person who does the thing we saw yesterday expresses a series of frustrations which are not necessarily linked to football,” said Bielsa on Monday as transcribed by Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Phil Hay.

“Because the more satisfied you are with your personal life, the less you need to do this kind of act.”

Durham reacted to Bielsa’s remarks to share that he thought Leeds boss was absolutely spot-on.

“Bielsa absolutely nailing it while an ex player from the UK calls for armed police at football,” tweeted Durham via his verified Twitter account.

“Respect for Bielsa reaching all time peak levels.”

OPINION

The incident involving Grealish in Aston Villa’s 1-0 win over Birmingham City on Sunday will surely have the football world talking for the foreseeable future. The unsavoury scene was something you never want to witness in football and it should lead to changes in the game. While former Wales international David Cotterill suggested that the police should be armed in the future, as covered by the BBC’s live blog, that would be an extreme action to take. Bielsa’s remarks on the incident are spot-on as while the incident occurred during a football game, it may not be connected to football at all. The Leeds manager is no doubt aware of how fierce local rivalries can be, but he is right to suggest that the person in question likely wasn’t driven by football motives. Many have spoken out about the Grealish incident, but few have done it as articulately as Bielsa has. It’s no surprise that Durham therefore felt the need to gush about the Leeds man.
