OPINION
Andrew Gutman’s debut for Charlotte Independence could have gone better as he was on the losing side in a 3-2 defeat to Indy Eleven in the USL Championship on Saturday, however Celtic’s loaned-out left-back did manage to get on the scoresheet with a superb header towards the end of the game. Celtic fans can be forgiven for not knowing a lot about Gutman before he signed for the Hoops in January, but the signs are certainly promising as he scored on his senior debut. Understandably, many Hoops fans were blown away by the American left-back’s goal, and hopefully they will see him doing something similar for them in the future. Gutman seems like a player who is playing below his level in what is effectively the USA’s second-tier of football. However he would not have been able to join an MLS side on loan due to a complex system in American football. Maybe in the future he can shine in the USA’s biggest league, or even in Europe, if he can earn himself a work permit.
