Quest pundit Dean Ashton has slammed Leeds United forward Kemar Roofe for being “out of form” before his recent injury.

The 26-year-old has been a key player for the Whites this season, scoring 14 goals in 27 appearances across all competitions, however only one of them has been scored since the start of 2019.

Roofe is currently sidelined with a knee injury and Ashton has admitted that even though the former West Brom man wasn’t in the best goalscoring form before his injury, Leeds will miss him in the Championship run-in.

“The only worry I would have for them at the moment is that Kemar Roofe is out with injury. He was out of form before getting sidelined and that is a worry. Norwich have Teemu Pukki and Sheffield United have Billy Sharp and their goals can be hard to keep with,” Ashton told Football League World.

OPINION

Ashton isn’t making much sense here. He says Roofe was out of form, but he’s also saying that they will miss him because of his injury. Surely if he was out of form then his injury would be a blessing in disguise. Either way, Roofe’s form wasn’t as bad as Ashton is making out. Obviously his goals dried up, but that was mainly because the whole of Marcelo Bielsa’s squad went through a rough patch through January. It’s unfair to single out Roofe just because he wasn’t getting the goals because Leeds’ midfield and defence were also failing to raise their game and help see out wins. Ashton’s point about Norwich and Sheffield United is a fair one though. Pukki and Sharp have been lethal this season and their goals have really raised their team into serious promotion contention. Leeds don’t have a single goalscorer, they score goals from all over the pitch and Patrick Bamford’s double against West Brom shows that he can step up in the coming weeks to help see out promotion.
