Stan Collymore has claimed that Aston Villa will “blag it” if they are promoted to the Premier League this season after their 3-3 draw against Sheffield United at Villa Park on Friday night.

Billy Sharp’s hat-trick put the Blades three-goals ahead, but a superb comeback by Dean Smith’s side managed to salvage a point and stop the Yorkshire club from taking top spot in the Championship table.

Although it was a well-earned point in the end, Collymore has rubbished the idea that there is a special “spirit” in the Villa squad that is helping them avoid defeats this season.

“Ultimately, good teams take the initiative from the off,” said Collymore, via his personal Twitter account on Friday night.

“That’s why Sheffield United won’t be far away (no right to be there with £ spend), and Aston Villa will blag it (huge £ should be top 2) if they go up.

“Not having Villa “spirit” myth. It’s a major concern.”

OPINION

It would be a massive, massive shock if Aston Villa get promoted this season. They are eight in the Championship table as it stands, but could drop down several places if results go against them over the weekend. Smith’s men might only be three points away from the play-off spots but they have also played two more games than Bristol City, Middlesbrough and West Brom. Villa are conceding way too many goals to get promoted, it’s nothing to do with refereeing decisions. While they have had their fair share of bad luck this term, other teams have also seen referring decisions go against them. Jack Grealish should return to action later this month, but it might be too late for him to have much of an impact to help turn this form around. Villa’s best hopes of going up are in the play-offs, but they have not done too well against the better teams in the league this season.
