Robbie Savage has urged Everton to keep faith in manager Marco Silva, arguing that constantly hiring and firing bosses is a ‘road to nowhere’.

The Toffees like ninth in the table with just three wins in their last 13 Premier League matches, but BT pundit Savage claims that they must allow the Portuguese boss the opportunity to turn things around.

Writing in a column for the Mirror, he said: “Marco Silva deserves more time to build a team in his identity at Everton – but let’s get real.

“Zonal marking isn’t working. He needs to ditch it because it’s a weakness which is dragging him down.

“But I hope Everton are not going to fall into the trap of making another change in the dugout: On the evidence of the last couple of years, hiring and firing managers is the road to nowhere.

“If Everton see themselves as one of the so-called Big Six, instead of competing every year for ‘best of the rest’ in seventh, they are not going to get there by chopping and changing managers every year.”

OPINION

Savage is absolutely right. It may be hard for Everton fans to swallow their current run of form, but after such a lengthy pursuit of Silva the least they can do is afford him the opportunity to properly build a side in his image. The Toffees aren’t going to get relegated, and Europe is not out of the question, so why shouldn’t he be given more time to prove himself? It’s an unfortunate symptom of the modern game that manager’s are hired and fired so readily because sometimes success takes real time. The main question now, however, is how long is long enough? If Everton are still in this position next season you would fancy that Silva would have to be ousted, but then the argument would be, is a season and a half substantial enough to properly influence a side’s fortunes? It’s a tightrope, and Silva hasn’t made the decision making process any easier with his underwhelming start to life in the hottest at Goodison Park.
