Chris Sutton blasted Rangers attacker Alfredo Morelos for his disciplinary record despite claiming he was the biggest player at the Gers currently.

The outspoken pundit claimed that Steven Gerrard probably felt like pinning the Gers forward against the wall to tell him that he was letting him down after the attacker picked up a red card against Aberdeen.

Sutton added that due to his disciplinary record Morelos was a liability for the Gers even though he thought the attacker had also been their best player this season.

“To be honest I have to say his second goal was one of the finishes of the season and you talk about how important he is for Rangers…he is their biggest player and he has been their best player but his record goes before him,” said Sutton on Premier Sports, as soon in a clip on the broadcaster’s official Twitter account.

“Four reds, fifteen yellows, he is a liability and you look at the games, he got sent off in the Aberdeen game and that was three points down the game, the following game against Dundee so two more points and they’re six points behind Celtic and that could have been completely different.

“The question is can Steven Gerrard trust him? He can’t, privately he must want to get him up against the wall and pin him…and tell him he is letting him down, because he is!”

OPINION

Sutton’s description of how he thinks Gerrard feels is a little odd, though it’s far to say it’s likely that the Gers manager is frustrated. Morelos is a very talented forward who is clinical in front of goal and clearly has a big role to play at Ibrox this season. However he won’t be able to deliver the goods if he is constantly unavailable due to getting suspended. While Sutton’s verdict is a little mixed as he clearly rates the player, it’s fair to say that he is a fan of the forward constantly picking up bookings. The fact he points out that Rangers could be closer to Celtic in the race for the league title if Morelos hadn’t let them down in certain games is very telling. While some may argue that Morelos’ red card from the recent victory over Aberdeen was harsh, he has earn a reputation where you can’t give him the benefit of the doubt.
