Lee McCulloch has drooled over the impact midfielder Ross McCrorie has been making at Rangers, hailing him as a “tremendous athlete”.

The former Gers defender remarked on how pleased he was to see the 20-year-old performing well recently, saying that he is only going to improve as he grows in confidence, especially after boss Steven Gerrard said he could be the club captain in the future.

McCulloch adds that as the young ace gets older, he will start to realise more of what he is capable of, whilst also praising how well he performs in the midfield.

“Steven Gerrard said a few weeks ago that Ross McCrorie was a potential captain of Rangers in the future and it has been really pleasing to see him perform the way he has recently. Ross is a tremendous athlete, he is quick, aggressive and powerful, even though he doesn’t look it,” he said in his Evening Times column.

“He will only get better and the words from Steven about him being able to go on and skipper the team will give him a huge boost. He doesn’t get a lot of assists by threading through balls, he is not like a Steve Davis or a Barry Ferguson.

“But he brings so much to the team in a defensive sense and he does a terrific job in the middle of the park. As he gets older and improves, he will realise his full potential and he could change his game, because he can pass the ball.”

OPINION

McCrorie has received a lot of praise recently, and that is no surprise given his recent performances. He has really come into his own lately and the impact he has been having on the team has been fantastic. At times, you forget that he is only 20-years-old because of how well he plays, and like McCulloch pointed out, he does a great job in the midfield. Gerrard must be counting his lucky stars that he has unearthed a gem like McCrorie, as he is going to be pivotal in seasons to come. He is the type of player that they have needed in the midfield and sometimes he puts his teammates to shame. It is hard to see him being dropped from the team any time soon, and this may mean that Gerrard may have to keep new signing Steven Davis on the bench for quite a while – as McCrorie is not showing any signs of slowing.
