Celtic legend Frank McAvennie bemoaned Scott Brown getting his second yellow for celebrating after scoring the winning goal against Kilmarnock on Sunday.

The 59-year-old, who had two separate spells at the Hoops during his playing career, claimed the rule that saw the Celtic midfielder receive his marching orders was the worst one in football.

McAvennie then added that while he didn’t think Celtic and Kilmarnock’s latest clash was pleasing on the eye, it was the type of games that champions grind out wins in.

“That has to be the worst rule in football, why can’t you enjoy scoring such an important goal, not the best game to watch but that’s what champions do, well done @CelticFC,” tweeted McAvennie via his verified Twitter account.

OPINION

McAvennie clearly wasn’t happy with Brown’s celebrations over scoring a potentially important goal in Celtic’s league title hopes being overshadowed by the referee showing the player a red card. It’s fair to say that McAvennie remarks are easy to agree with, but at the end of the day the rule about celebrating with the crowd is in the letters of the law for a reason. However you do feel common sense should be applied at time and cases like Brown’s, shouldn’t see him leave the pitch. Celtic’s 1-0 victory over Kilmarnock sees them move eight points clear of archrivals and second-placed Rangers, and you now wouldn’t back against lifting the title once again. Just as McAvennie’s stated, Sunday’s clash may not have been the most thrilling to watch but Brendan Rodgers’ side got what they needed to from the match, with that being three points. Now Celtic know that if just keep doing what they do domestically, they’ll have another trophy for the cabinet.
