Swedish outfit Malmo are keen on signing Celtic right-back Mikael Lustig, according to Fotboll Direkt.

The Swedish outlet report on their website that Malmo have entered the race for the veteran defender’s signature, with AIK Stockholm also interested in bringing him back to his home country.

However, the report adds that the Europa League side have made Lustig – who is out of contract with the Hoops in the summer – an offer that trumps that of rivals AIK Stockholm.

The 6ft 2in [Transfermarkt] player now has competition in the shape of fellow right-back Jeremy Toljan, who Celtic signed in the January transfer window.

Good move for Celtic?

Considering that Brendan Rodgers has signed Toljan, getting rid of Lustig would not be the worst idea. He is going to struggle for game time with Toljan, so it makes sense for him to move somewhere he is likely to get more minutes under his belt. His form has declined in recent times, so it would not be such a bad thing if the Hoops allowed him to move on. Many Celtic fans are not so keen on him anymore, so it best for everyone if he does leave.

Likely to happen?

The likelihood of Lustig moving is increasing as time goes on – and now that there are two clubs in the race for his services, a move looks to be on the cards. Malmo seem like they are the most likely destination for the 32-year-old as they have made a larger offer than AIK Stockholm – and with his minutes decreasing, the prospect of moving will be very attractive to Lustig. He is approaching the final years of his career, so it is only fair he moves somewhere he will be valued.
