Honeymoon over for Toljan

OPINION

Jeremy Toljan’s honeymoon period at Celtic is well and truly over after he submitted a dismal display against Kilmarnock and was painfully exposed as a result.

The Hoops may have won 1-0 thanks to a Scott Brown goal, but that last-gasp winner only papered over the cracks shown in Brendan Rodgers’ team.

In fact one of these cracks that seem to be clear to the naked eye, was just how bad Toljan’s Sunday afternoon was.

The 23-year-old right-back spent the first 45 minutes of the match being painfully exposed by Kilmarnock winger Jordan Jones who just seemed to have the better of him on every single occasion.

While Jones’ performance did eventually dip and saw him stop being nightmare fuel for Toljan, the Kilmarnock attacker backing off didn’t see the Celtic defender improve.

Toljan was off-the-pace, regularly caught out of position and his passes weren’t up to much either.

Also to make matters worse, the right-sided flyer also had a terrible outing against Valencia in midweek, where he seemed to be on the brink of being considered a liability.

This is a dramatic change in situation for Toljan as by all means in his previous outings he had blown Celtic supporters away for the right reasons.

The 23-year-old who arrived at Celtic Park in January on loan from Borussia Dortmund, looked like an accomplished defender who was as much as a threat going forward as he was solid at the back.

In his league outings against St Johnstone, where he played 45 minutes, and Hibernian, he could have easily made a case for himself about why he should have been man of the match.

Yet it seems Toljan’s honeymoon period is well and truly over at Celtic after his dismal display against Killie saw him exposed and get noticed for all the wrong reasons.
