Chris Sutton questioned whether if Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy had splashed the cash in January whether they’d have a better chance of winning the Premier League title.
The BBC pundit shared that he thought Mauricio Pochettino had made it clear in the summer that Spurs needed strengthening and then implied that after the London club overtook Manchester City in January, Levy signing players could have helped them.
“Why are Spurs fans so negative? When you came on first thing you said was we can’t win the league (caller highlights Man City’s display v Chelsea), but how good are Tottenham on their day?” said Sutton on BBC Radio 5 Live (Sunday February 10th, 18:49).
“There’s always an excuse (Spurs fan said they missed their chance when Leicester won title) yeah but you must want to win, you can’t keep enjoying 2nd, 3rd, 4th, I’m not saying it’s not a big achieve because it is, but you want to win a cup or something.”
“Go back to last summer when Pochettino said we need to take a risk, basically saying we needed to strengthening then go back to the January window where all of a sudden Spurs leapfrogged Man City last week and everyone is thinking blimey they’re back in the title race, if Daniel Levy had spent money then, Tottenham would have had a better chance of winning the title?”
Sutton then continued on remarking on Spurs fans after the break for the news as he made a cheeky dig at them as he claimed supporters of Newport County have more belief.
“Newport fans have more belief than Spurs fans,” claimed Sutton.
OPINION
Sutton couldn’t help but take a dig over Tottenham fans who weren’t backing their side to win the Premier League title this season, which as least shows he thinks they have an outside chance. While it’s understandable why Spurs supporters aren’t filled with belief over their chances with Manchester City and Liverpool looking formidable this season, they probably should be a bit cheerier in general. Sutton made the comments after Spurs fan called into BBC Radio 5 Live in order to dismiss Spurs’ title push and it’s way too early to rule them out. Until their dream of lifting the league title is mathematically dead, Tottenham fans should believe that anything is possible as the race for the title this season has had so many twists and turns. Also it’s fair to say that Sutton is well within his right to ask a question about Levy in regards to the title race, as if he had scrambled together some funds in January, it could have been a gamechanger.
