It seems almost certain that Toby Alderweireld will be leaving Tottenham in the summer.

The Spurs centre-back is a man in demand, and with a new contract extension that triggers a £25 million release clause, as reported by The Telegraph, all signed and sealed, it seems as if the club may have a job on their hands if they are to keep their star defender.

The general feeling has been that they will have to then go into the market and sign a replacement, but Davinson Sanchez’s performance against Leicester City on Sunday afternoon would seem to suggest that he may be ready to step up to the plate.

The 22-year-old Colombian has shedloads of potential, and is already a talented player, but lacks a certain amount of composure and awareness that will only come with time and experience.

He seems to have turned a bit of a corner recently, however, and put in a solid display capped with his first goal for the club.

Spurs will still have to make a move in the transfer window should Alderweireld leave of course, but it would make things a lot easier for the club if they had to recruit a deputy as opposed to a nailed on starter.

On the face of it, Sanchez could go on to become one of the best defenders in the Premier League, and it is testament to Mauricio Pochettino that he has showed so much faith in the youngster from so early on.

Now it is time for him to reap the benefits.
