Charlie Nicholas predicted Tottenham to draw 1-1 with Borussia Dortmund when the two European sides clash in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The Sky Sports pundit heaped praise on Heung-Min Son while predicting Spurs’ forthcoming clash and revealed that he thought the player was using his outstanding energy levels to carry the club through.

While Nicholas was full of praise for the 26-year-old who he believes has the potential to be a contender for Premier League player of the year, he added that he was concerned by Spurs’ defence especially with Dortmund likely to attempt to hit them on counter-attacker.

“Spurs are grinding results at the minute but doing the business without Harry Kane and Dele Alli. Heung-Min Son has to be in the potential list of six for Premier League player of the year. He is carrying Spurs through and his energy levels have been outstanding,” wrote Nicholas for Sky Sports.

“This is a different Dortmund side though, and I still feel Spurs have a weakness at the back. Mauricio Pochettino has been chopping and changing too much in defence. Kane could be back for the return leg but the reality is this is another game of goals.

“Both teams will open up and attack well. Dortmund will not be as adventurous – they will sit in and counter-attack which will be dangerous for Spurs, and they will choke them and try to boss midfield.”

OPINION

A 1-1 draw for Tottenham wouldn’t be ideal on Wednesday, given that they will want to make the most of playing at Wembley as it will be a more difficult task to get a result against Dortmund in Germany. Mauricio Pochettino is no doubt aware of this and will try to get his side to throw everything they have at the Bundesliga team on Wednesday in order to gain some foothold in the tie. While many are likely writing Spurs’ chance off in the Champions League this season, they are capable of overcoming Dortmund when at their best. Though every single player, particularly the defenders, need to perform to their max level. As for Nicholas’ praise of Son, it’s hard to disagree with him. The Spurs attacker has been so important in recent weeks and will continue to impress no doubt. If Son does make it onto the shortlist for the Premier League player of the year then it will be a deserved honour for him.
