A journalist has claimed he would be “stunned” if Vincent Janssen plays another game for Tottenham despite being brought back into the fold by Mauricio Pochettino.

Writing in a Q&A session for Football London on Monday (4.20pm), correspondent Alasdair Gold explained there is no way back for the Holland international into the Londoners’ first team.

Gold explained that Janssen is fifth in the centre-forward pecking order behind Harry Kane, Fernando Llorente, Son Heung-Min and Lucas Moura and only “an injury crisis of epic proportions” or if he “suddenly turns into the next Messi in training” will lead to an unlikely recall.

OPINION

Janssen’s failure to secure a loan or permanent move in the January window appeared to have led to a change of stance from Pochettino, who had previously ruled out the possibility of the Dutchman ever getting back in his senior squad. But it appears to have changed little in reality for the 24-year-old Dutchman. He is just marking time at Spurs, where his lack of mobility and all-round threat in the centre-forward role means others are a long way ahead of him in the first-team selection battle. Certainly, the £18million misfit will be remembered as one of the worst signings of the Daniel Levy era, a ‘Goliath’ in his native Holland but a ‘David’ in the Premier League where a different and more refined skill-set is required to thrive. Fernando Llorente is nine years older, but a far better option when Pochettino requires a physical threat who can win the ball in the air and create chances by playing with his back to goal.
