Les Ferdinand is not confident that Tottenham have a chance of winning the Premier League title this season.
Spurs are now five points below Liverpool after they dropped points in a 1-1 draw with West Ham on Monday night, but despite the slender points gap, Ferdinand does not think Tottenham will go on to lift the trophy this term.
The former Spurs player adds that the club needed to recruit new signings in order to be considered as contenders, but seeing as they have not signed anyone, they are not capable winning the title – even if they are getting some good results.
“We were saying when they finished second a couple of years ago that they needed to add to that squad to be able to be serious contenders,” he told Sky Sports.
“They’ve not really done that and although they’re getting results, I still don’t see them as being title contenders at this moment in time. I think Pochettino has done a fantastic job and a load of the players that he’s got there have improved year in, year out.
“So they’ve probably looked at it and thought, ‘let’s not disrupt this.'”

This is quite the claim for Ferdinand to make about his former club. He should be talking up their chances of winning the title as well as being optimistic, but for some reason, that does not seem to be the case here. However, it is clear to see that he is being realistic. They may be five points below Liverpool at this moment in time, but that does not necessarily mean that they can catch them up before the season ends in May. They need to overtake Manchester City first in order to usurp the Reds from the top spot, and that will no doubt be a major obstacle in their quest. Spurs need to recruit in order to be considered as a favourite for the title in future, just as Ferdinand hinted – if they did not win it last season with the same squad, how can Mauricio Pochettino expect to do the same this time around? Summer signings are paramount, as things cannot continue the way they are – even if they are getting some good results.
