BBC Sport pundit Garth Crooks hailed Christian Eriksen as “like a diamond in the rough” following his polished display for an off-colour Tottenham on Sunday.

Spurs secured a fourth consecutive Premier League win as they triumphed 3-1 against Leicester City through strikes from Eriksen, Davinson Sanchez and Son Heung-Min.

“This was one of the worst performances I’ve seen from Spurs – but they could finish and Leicester couldn’t,” Crooks said as he named Eriksen in his BBC Sport team of the week.

“If Harvey Barnes had a little composure in front of goal, he’d be dangerous. Conversely Christian Eriksen looked cultured and shone like a diamond in the rough.”

Two of the real moments of quality from Spurs at Wembley came from the magic boots of their great Dane. First, he provided a pin-point cross to set up Sanchez’s first Tottenham goal after 33 minutes, before scoring his seventh goal of the season when he doubled the hosts’ advantage from the edge of the area in the second half. Eriksen was unusually slow to get going in this campaign, and even had a spell on the bench in the autumn as he struggled for form and fitness, but he is back to his string-pulling best just when most needed. He didn’t score his first league goal of the season until December, but now has five top-flight strikes under his belt, as well as nine assists in the competition. Normal service has been resumed, and it is looking more and more vital that the Tottenham hierarchy can achieve a breakthrough in contract talks with the playmaker that are currently stuck at stalemate.
