Premier League legend Alan Shearer has praised Tottenham Hotspur after they battled to a 3-1 victory over a competitive Leicester City side on Sunday.

Mauricio Pochettino’s team were made to work hard by the visitors at Wembley, but they ultimately overcame the Foxes thanks to goals from Davinson Sanchez, Christian Eriksen and Son Heung-min. Jamie Vardy was on target for Leicester.

It’s clear that Shearer was very impressed with Spurs’ fighting spirit: “Another win for Tottenham without playing well,” he wrote on his personal Twitter account.

“A very good sign!” he finished.

OPINION

Shearer is correct, it’s a very good sign if you can win when you’re not playing well. It’s become a cliche now, but with good reason. You can’t win 6-0 every week, as Manchester City did against Chelsea on Sunday, but if you can still secure three points when you’re not at your best then you’re onto a winner. Pochettino has got his players so well drilled and they fight to the very last minute. They had to work from the first minute to the last at Wembley, but it was ultimately worth it as they came away with the win. You could argue that Leicester deserved something from the game, but Tottenham are title contenders for a reason. They have some top class players and that’s what made the difference on Sunday. Eriksen and Son stepped up to the plate against the Foxes and ensured that Spurs would be on the winning team. That’s why Tottenham remain in the title race and, make no mistake about it, they are very much in the fight for the championship down the stretch here.
