When Harry Kane picked up his ankle ligament injury against Manchester United in January, the automatic reaction for many was to demand that Spurs went out and bought a more able replacement in January than Fernando Llorente.

That was much easier said than done. The 33-year-old Spaniard may not be the ideal man for the club’s fluent, passing-based style of play, but he is at least willing to warm the bench for 11 months of the year while Kane runs amok.

The issue Spurs have, therefore, is finding a striker who can improve on what Llorente offers them, in terms of style of play and general ability, and who is still willing to play second fiddle to the England captain of for the majority of the season.

There aren’t many candidates, but one player who might just fit the bill could be Birmingham City goal machine Che Adams.

The 22-year-old has now hit 19 goals in all competitions for the Championship side so far this season, after having netted himself a hat trick in the topsy-turvy 4-3 win over QPR today (Saturday).

Adams is far from the finished article, but he has bucket-loads of potential and would be well suited to Spurs’ style of play.

The £15million-rated striker (Mirror) likes to stretch teams and get in behind with positive runs that ask questions of opposition defences, but he is also willing to come short for the ball and is tidy in possession.

Most importantly, however, he would probably be available at a decent price, and would almost certainly be eager to continue his progression under a striker as talented as Kane.

It would be a gamble, but it could be one that paid off big time.
