Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has hailed current Toon midfielder Sean Longstaff for his performance against Huddersfield Town, describing the 21-year-old as “faultless”.

The academy graduate impressed again in Saturday afternoon in a commanding 2-0 victory over struggling Huddersfield Town, and came in for praise from the Magpies’ favourite son.

Writing on Twitter after the match, all-time leading goalscorer Shearer said: “An impressive home debut from Almiron, but man of the match again Sean Longstaff, faultless in the middle of the pitch.”

OPINION

If you were Sean Longstaff right now you would be buzzing. After orchestrating proceedings in a massive 2-0 win over your relegation rivals in front of your adoring home fans in the stadium you’ve visited since you were a boy, to then come off the field and see that every Geordie’s hero has been waxing lyrical about you on Twitter must just be the icing on the cake. Longstaff has thoroughly deserved the praise that has been showered upon him, however. He has been nothing short of incredible since making his breakthrough into the first team in December, and the attention he is beginning to garner is more than justified. People are talking about Declan Rice at West Ham, and the impact he has had in their midfield – how long is it before Longstaff’s performances are met with the same kind of widespread, rabid acclaim? Surely not much longer.
