Ray Parlour heaped praise on Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff after witnessing him feature in the 1-1 draw with Wolves.

The former Premier League player shared that he really liked the 21-year-old in the Magpies’ midfield as he always wants the ball.

Parlour also added that he believes Rafa Benitez’s side were unlucky not to get all three points from their recent clash with Wolves, as he thought they looked a very good side.

“When I watched them against Wolves recently I thought they were very good,” said Parlour on talkSPORT (Friday February 22nd, 18:17).

“They had a real plan to go to a good side like Wolves, especially with the way they’ve been playing this season, and they were very unlucky to not get three points.

“That mistake last-minute from the goalkeeper, people argued it was a foul for me it wasn’t, they showed a lot of structure in the way they played.

“I really like Longstaff in midfield, he’s a real talent, he always wants the ball and y’know he is a player they haven’t had.”

OPINION

The performances of Longstaff in recent weeks have been a huge positive for the Magpies as there was previously a question mark over whether he was ready for the Premier League at this stage of his career. Yet the 21-year-old has put any doubts about his ability to bed by constantly playing with a maturity beyond his years when being utilised. Longstaff has featured six times in the Premier League, registering one assist in the process, and will surely feature against Huddersfield Town on Saturday. The 21-year-old has shown no fear at being challenged, hence why he always looks like he wants the ball, and you’d back him to get better and better with each passing game. Longstaff’s impact on the first team has helped cover up the fact that the Magpies probably should have done more business in the last two transfer windows to aid their cause.
