There is a deal there to be done for Salomon Rondon in the summer should Newcastle United wish to pursue it after failing in their attempts to seal his permanent signing in January, according to the Chronicle.

The Venezuelan hitman has been a runaway success since signing for the Magpies on loan from West Brom over the summer, scoring seven goals in all competitions.

It is reported by the newpaper that United attempted to negotiate a fee for a potential permanent transfer during the talks that saw Jacob Murphy join the Baggies on loan this January, but no conclusion was met.

Despite this, and in spite of interest from Spain and China, it is believed that a permanent move for the striker is a serious possibility with the Magpies in pole position to seal his signing, should Newcastle decide that is what they want.

OPINION

Newcastle United would have to be mad not to sign Rondon at the end of the season. Clearly, West Brom would be happy to let him go, he has been a monumental success on Tyneside, and with Dwight Gayle and Jacob Murphy both at the Hawthorns on loan and surplus to requirements in the north east, they have plenty of leverage too. If the Magpies stay up, and honestly, you would back them to at this point of the season, so much of it will be down t the intervention of the Venezuelan. Aside from his goalscoring heroics, which have won them so many points already this season, Rondon is a nuisance whose hold up play and willingness to interlink with teammates is essential to the way that Newcastle approach the attacking third. He is a proper focal point, a rarity in the English game, and provides a pivot around which the whole side can rotate. The Magpies need to make him theirs.
