OPINION
This was always going to be the big one for Miguel Almiron. After weeks of waiting, and a brief cameo against Wolves to make his debut, Saturday was finally the Paraguayan’s opportunity to make his bow in front of his eagerly awaiting home crowd – and he did not disappoint against Huddersfield Town. The 24-year-old was electric from the first whistle, and had fans drooling over his rapid pace and quick feet. The playmaker looked entirely at home at St. James’ Park and went close to opening his account in the first half when a diet chip came back off the post. That chance aside, he was a constant thorn in the Terriers’ side, and provided wonderful service to Salmon Rondon throughout. One game doesn’t make a player, and Almiron has a long way to go in terms of his Newcastle career, but if he can match this effort and desire in every game he plays, then the Toon Army will certainly have a new hero to get excited about. It’s been so long since the Geordies have had a player to get genuinely excited about, but on the basis of this full debut, that drought is well and truly over.
