Newcastle United record signing Miguel Almiron has suggested that he should be able to make his debut for his new club against Wolves next Monday in a huge boost for the Toon Army.

The 24-year-old Paraguayan international completed a £20 million move to Tyneside on deadline day, but was unable to feature in the Magpies’ 1-0 defeat to Tottenham due to a delay in being granted a work permit.

Speaking to El Regate 1120am, as quoted by the Chronicle, he said: “I still need to get my work visa so that I can start training and start playing with the team.

“I hope to be ready to play against Wolves on February 11.

“I’ve been told that the Newcastle fans are very passionate and I think the people are not only happy that I’m here, but they’re happy with the team that they have.

“Newcastle is a historic club that is on the way up and also have wonderful players.”

OPINION

The Toon faithful will be buzzing to see their new hero in action, and it’s bit of shame that his debut will probably come in an away match. The 24-year-old is exactly the kind of player that Newcastle have been crying out for in recent times, and he could be the creative spark that ignites a really positive start to the season. Wolves on a Monday night is a baptism of fire, but if he can come through it with some minutes under his belt and a bit of familiarity with his teammates then it can only be a good thing. People are talking about how Almiron will be a gamble for the Magpies, and in a lot of ways he is, but Rafa Benitez is no fool, and if he has chosen to pursue the 24-year-old for this ling, and to dedicate so much of his effort to scouting him and ensuring that he made the move to the north east, you can guarantee that the Spaniard is sure he has the right man.
