It’s never quite worked out for Rolando Aarons at Newcastle United.

The winger made a precocious start to life in the professional game and looked like he was destined for a very bright future when he made his debut back in 2014.

Since then, things have stagnated for the 23-year-old, and after a series of mixed loan spells, his Newcastle career looked to be hanging in the balance – having likely been forgotten by the fans at St James’ Park.

A January move to Sheffield Wednesday could be exactly what is needed for the wide man, however, and after scoring his first goal for the Owls on Tuesday night, it looks as if the decision to make the switch to the Steel City might just pay off.

On the surface, a Championship side was the perfect destination for both the player and his parent club. A team like Wednesday will act as the perfect barometer of where his is at as a player and could well teach him a few things that will be beneficial to the Magpies on his return.

As it is, Aarons, for all he is only four games into his time in Yorkshire, is looking more and more like the talent he threatened to become with every oasis appearance

That is tremendous news for Newcastle, who could use a direct, pacy option out wide given the form of their current personnel.

The step up to the Premier League wouldn’t be an easy one, and it’s vital that nobody gets ahead of themselves here, but if Aarons keeps up the good work, he surely deserves another crack at the top flight.
