West Brom missed out on the capture of Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay after they launched a deadline day loan bid, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claim on their website that the 22-year-old Scottish international was ready and willing to drop into England’s second tier to pick up regular game time with the Baggies having lined up a move to take him from Old Trafford until the end of the season.

However the bid is said to have collapsed due to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insisting he needed the five-cap ace to remain at the Premier League giants.

Opinion

What a massive shame for West Brom – although the amount of loanees already in their squad would have meant a serious headache for Darren Moore. He has already had to contend with the limit of how many temporary signings you can include in your match day squad and having McTominay as an option would have only made that a more difficult decision to make. The Manchester United man would have been a quality addition to the side at the Hawthorns, bringing Premier League experience and undoubted quality to the middle of the park, but whether he would get the playing time he wants is another matter entirely. Still, this is one that will be put down in the missed opportunity column for both player and club. Maybe the Baggies will be back for his signing in the not-too-distant future, when they might be able to offer the promising talent a taste of regular top flight football instead.
